How we turned an abandoned lot into a community garden — full guide

18 months ago this was a trash-filled abandoned lot. Today it feeds 23 families.

What we did:
1. Contacted the city — found out it was tax-delinquent property
2. Formed a community land trust (nonprofit, 3 months)
3. Applied for city grants — got €8,400
4. 40 volunteer days over spring
5. Now: 45 raised beds, fruit trees, weekly market

This is incredible. What was the legal structure for the land trust? Did you work with a lawyer or DIY?

We used a lawyer for the initial filing (about £800) but the template was open source from the Community Land Trust Network UK.

This model needs to scale. 23 families is great but imagine 2,300. What would need to change to make this replicable?

The documentation approach is key. Most community projects fail because knowledge stays with founders. Template everything.
